Martin Joseph Mengal (1784-1851)
Complete Wind Quintets

Das Reicha’sche Quintett

Recorded 2003
Published 2005

CD 1

Quintet after Haydn
1. Allegro non troppo
2. Andante
3. Minuetto: Allegretto
4. Finale: Allegro

Quintet after Mozart
1. Allegro non troppo
2. Adagio
3. Minuetto: Allegretto
4. Finale: Allegro

CD 2

Quintet after Beethoven
1. Allegro
2. Andante
3. Minuetto: Allegro
4. Finale: Allegro

Quintet after Rossini
1. Adagio
2. Allegro non troppo

Three of these quintets were published in 1824 by Ignaz Pleyel. They incorporate themes by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, respectively. The fourth one, however, probably predates this collection. The music cites Rossini's opera “The Barber of Seville”, which was first performed in 1816.

It appears that this CD set may be about to go out of print.

  4. Dear Anchusa, I bookmark this for later download. I never heard the name "Martin Joseph Mengal". BTW, thanks for linking to posts of mine in your "Elsewhere in the blogosphere" column. A column like this is a fine idea, maybe I start the same feature.
